As a follow up to the heavily lauded 2011 Iron Side Reserve Napa Cabernet, the 2014 Iron Side Reserve Red is a proprietary blend of some of the best Napa has to offer.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the top dog in Napa Valley but this wasn’t always so. Classic grape varieties like Zinfandel and Petite Sirah got there first. These two are the pioneers of early California winemaking. Sadly, much of the old vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah were replaced with the more aristocratic Cabernet. But, a few old vineyards survive, pumping out fruit powerful enough to turn blue-blooded Cabernet green with envy. If you’re searching for a premium red that combines finesse with force, then this is your bottle.

The 2014 Iron Side Reserve was assembled from an assortment of premium red wines primarily from Oakville and Rutherford in Napa Valley. One-third of the wine comes from Merlot picked from vines on the eastern benchlands of Oakville. Old Vine Zinfandel and Petie Sirah represent a quarter each of the blend. Both come from Rutherford. These three varieties were aged separately for 12 to 18 months in a blend of new and one-year-old French oak barrels. The remainder of the blend is comprised of Malbec (14%) from Napa and Cabernet Sauvignon (4%) from Red Hills.

Tasting Notes:

Intensely dark in color, and bursting with flavors of blackberry, black cherry, and dark chocolate. This is a full-bodied wine with a chiseled texture and a long, smooth finish featuring alluring flavors of vanilla, sweet spice, and pipe tobacco. It’s a wine that combines macho horsepower with sophisticated coolness, like driving a muscle car in a tuxedo. Grab a bottle, pop the cork, pour the wine into a big glass and taste how good Napa Valley’s “other” red can be.

Cellared and bottled by 90+ Cellars in Healdsburg, CA. 13.9% alcohol by volume. Contains sulfites.
